About the Illustrator
Kalena Makanui is a Kanaka Maoli/Native Hawaiian artist who grew up on Hawaiʻi Island around beaches and lava fields. She still loves exploring the rainforest and searching for ʻiʻiwi (honeycreepers), pueo (owls), and ʻūhini (crickets). Her favorite Hawaiʻi animal is the honu (green sea turtle)!
